Q: WHAT IS VITAMIN D?
A: Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that plays a role in immune cell function which helps to protect your body from disease. It is a hormone made by your body in a chemical reaction which occurs when your skin is exposed to adequate levels of sunlight. Vitamin D helps your body to effectively absorb calcium which helps your body to maintain healthy bones.

Q: HOW CAN VITAMIN D BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM?
A: The key functions requiring Vitamin D include the absorption of both calcium and phosphorous, as well as contributing to the boosting of immunity.

Q: WHAT ARE THE BEST SOURCES OF VITAMIN D?
A: There are 3 key sources of Vitamin D, Exposure to sunlight, Food sources and Vitamin D supplements. The most natural way to obtain Vitamin D is to expose your skin to sunshine, in the UK, between 10 to 20 minutes of sun exposure per day is usually recommended but this is dependent on the time of year and weather conditions. Vitamin D is only stored within your body for two months, so the Vitamin D accumulated during the summer will start to dwindle in the autumn months. Vitamin D3 is most commonly found in animal-sourced foods such as: Oily fish – tuna, salmon, sardines, Liver, Eggs, Cheese, Mushrooms, Fortified foods – cereals, orange juice. You can take a Vitamin D supplementation to boost levels within your body. There are specially formulated Vitamin D sprays especially if you struggle or dislike swallowing tablets. The Spray can enter the bloodstream quickly. Taking too much Vitamin D can cause a calcium build-up and lead to weak bones, kidneys and heart damage.

Q: WHAT ARE THE COMMON SYMPTOMS OF LOW VITAMIN D?
A: They are – Muscle weakness, Bone pain, Fatigue and tiredness, Muscle aches or cramps, frequent illness, these may also be because of other medical issues so please consult your primary care provider. Vitamin D deficiency is seen more in obesity and diabetes both of which are risk factors in Covid 19. Moreover Vitamin D deficiency leads to increase in thrombotic episodes which is also seen in Covid 19. 

Q: WHY DO DARKER SKIN PEOPLE NEED TO BOOST THEIR VITAMIN D?
A: Melanin is a protective pigment found on the skin to block UV radiation. Less sun penetrates through the darker skin than the fairer skin. Darker skin needs 6 times more sun to get vitamin. Maybe this is a big difference between light and dark skin people when it comes to immunity – VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY. People who are unable to obtain adequate exposure to sunshine regularly and ethnic minority groups with dark skin are advised to take some form of supplement regularly all year round.

Q: WHAT IS MEANT BY HEALTH AND HEALTHCARE?
A: The World Health Organisation defines Health as a “state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” Healthcare can simply be defined as disease care.

Q: HOW DO ALLOPATHY AND AYURVEDA DIFFER IN THEIR APPROACH TO HEALTH AND HEALTHCARE?
A: The key difference is that Allopathy treats the symptoms of the disease whereas Ayurveda treats the causes of the disease. Allopathy’s sole objective has been to focus on the illness as an attack on the body, and the treatment as a fight against it whereas Ayurveda is primarily a preventative art focusing on lifestyle and secondarily a curative science, focusing on the root cause of the disease and its elimination.

Q: WHAT IS THE VALUE OF THE INITIAL CONSULTATION WITH ALLOPATHY AND AYURVEDA?
A: In Allopathy your doctor will order a wide variety of tests and if he is unable to find the cause then he will order more which takes time whereas Ayurveda consultation can reveal your ailment by checking for imbalances through your dosha, pulse reading, checking the functioning of metabolic processes such as digestion and excretion, checking that sensory organs are balanced and finally the stability of your mind.

Q:HOW HAS HERBAL MEDICINE BEEN USED IN ALLOPATHY AND AYURVEDA?
A: Modern drugs prescribed in Allopathy are created by extracting the active substance from nature and later synthesising it in a laboratory, with their composition, of herbal medicines, reduced. Ayurveda remedies are close to nature. They make use of natural herbs, extracts, and plants. One of the advantages of Ayurveda over allopathy is that the herbs and plants that it uses do not have side effects that mimic allopathic medicine. Allopathic medicine comes with side effects that can range from mild to severe. In Ayurvedic medicine, this is not the case because all the remedies are naturally made with natural ingredients that don’t cause devastating effects on your health.

Q: WHAT FACTOR AFFECTS THE STABILITY OF THE MIND MOST?
A; There are a number of factors in life that can have an impact on your mental health. Most people at some point feel worried, stressed or even down about things that are going on in their lives. Ayurveda relates the mind with the nervous system.

Q: WHY IS THE AGED OLD AYURVEDA SYSTEM OF MEDICINE STILL PRACTISED TODAY?
A: Ayurveda is a way of life entrenched into South Asian daily lives. It influences the routines, diet, exercise and healthcare. It travels with the person and has taken residence in many parts of the world. It is then handed down from parent to child. The success of Ayurveda at curing a common cold or an upset stomach today with time tested simple herbs used thousands of years ago has helped it to withstand the test of time.

Q: CAN AYURVEDA HELP DURING A PANDEMIC?
A: Ayurveda is a 5,000 year old Healthcare system. During its existence it has experienced epidemics and pandemics. The body that regulates Ayurveda and other Natural Indian Sciences, AYUSH has offered guidance to prevent and control and has recommend aftercare.

Q: WHAT SHOULD MY HEALTH PRIORITY BE DURING THIS TIME?
A: Our immune system is our body’s first line of defence. It’s important that we all also do our part to support this system so it too can function at its highest. If we are constantly and chronically stressed out, sleep-deprived, malnourished, or dehydrated over time our immune function will weaken.

Life has changed irrevocably this year, and once again lockdown is due to be lifted this week. As per Government guidelines we will be re-opening our doors and provide our services to the community once more.

In this day and age of mental stress and physical unrest we want to bring back the healing touch to our valued clients.

Please note we are implementing a variety of new hygiene and Covid-related procedures to ensure the full health and safety of our clients. We will also need to take deposits for all bookings.

September 2020 Newsletter Update

Thank you to all our clients who have remembered us during the lock down and have called after the lock down to see how we managed. Its been rough like most businesses but we are getting by, between the Dangerous Disease and the weather, we are trying to survive.

Our centres began to feel the impact of Covid 19 from about the beginning of March, we were eventually forced to shut down on 23/03/2020. We were able to assist some of our clients by giving advice over the phone during lockdown.

Our Sparkhill Clinic has water damage and also needs to be Covid Proofed. We have developed the grounds at Karma Centre exercises, yoga, Tai Chi etc We have now Covid proofed the Karma Centre and retrained staff to work using PPE. All our staff are being employed on a part-time basis at the Karma Centre.We are booking in at the Karma Centre where the private Car Park and gardens will help make our clients feel more comfortable and safe.

OUR PRICES HAVE INCREASED – each therapy needs the room sanitised after and left so we cant use the room immediately. We loose therapy times and have to pay for additional cleaning. Our clients are required to bring 2 of their own bath towels.We are undertaking all the measures recommended to make our centres SAFE FOR OUR CLIENTS AND STAFF.

Onam is a harvest festival celebrated by our people from Kerala, India.

According to our legends, the festival is celebrated to commemorate King Mahabali, whose spirit is said to visit Kerala at the time of Onam.

Sadly, this year Onam festivities in Kerala have been cancelled as the state is in lock down. It’s also very low key in the UK. Sadhya is a feast of Kerala origin and of importance to all Malayalis, consisting of a variety of traditional vegetarian dishes usually served on a banana leaf in Kerala as lunch.

Sadhya means banquet in Malayalam. Sadhya is typically served as a traditional dish for Onam, the state festival of Kerala. Most of these dishes are very healthy.

Karma Centre invited to present at the 13th congress for integrative medicine in London in September 2020

We have some exciting news this month as we announce that world renowned academic Dr Madan Thangavelu is coming to the Karma Centre in Kings Heath and Kerala Ayurveda Spa Clinic in Birmingham. Dr Madan is a Genome Biologist with a PHD in Molecular Genetics from the University of Cambridge as well as being General Secretary of the European Ayurveda Association. As well as holding multiple academic titles in various scientific fields, Dr Madan has worked with a number of international bodies related to Ayurveda, holistic therapy and natural remedies.

As part of his research into the benefits of Ayurveda we give a warm welcome to Dr Madan who will visit our practices this month. His research will encompass a number of different facets of Ayurveda as well as looking into why it has grown in popularity in Birmingham. Kerala Ayurveda Spa Clinic and the Karma Centre are both fortunate to be based in Birmingham, the city with the largest South Asian community in Europe. In recent years we have seen a boom in Ayurvedic clinics opening or at least those which offer Ayurveda-derived massages and therapies.

Dr Madan will look into why Ayurveda is so popular at our practices and what the effect of Ayurveda on the individual, community and society at whole is. Dr Madan will be working closely with our trained Ayurveda doctors at both our Sparkhill and Kings Heath practices to build up his understanding. We are proud to say Dr Madan has chosen our practices precisely because we are considered one of the most popular and well known Ayurveda clinics in the Midlands.

Thanks to Dr Madan’s studies we hope Ayurveda will gain a foothold in medical practices around the UK as well as gain more respect as a healing therapy. With more scientific studies and in depth analysis of Ayurveda we hope the public and media at large will realise its full potential. We believe this collaboration with Dr Madan will allow the Karma Centre and Kerala Ayurveda Spa Clinic in Birmingham reach a larger audience to promote Ayurveda.

Winter Demands on the Human Body

Ayurveda originated over 6,000 years ago in a culture very different from ours, a time when life was closely connected with nature. Life was mostly governed by the changes in seasons and the time of day or night. Being in tune with nature, our ancestors adapted themselves to these changes. Indian Sages observed individual constitutions, or prakruti and were able to classify them into three subtle energies: vata, the energy of movement; pitta, the energy of digestion or metabolism; and kapha, the energy of lubrication and structure. The seasons are also classified into vata, pitta, and kapha.

The Indian Sages believed that for our system to remain in balance all year long we need to adjust to the environmental changes through diet, exercise and routines.

Ayurveda advocates the following winter routine:

  • Wake up around 7.00am.
  • Brush your teeth, scrape your tongue
  • Drink warm water.
  • Do some yoga and deep breathing.
  • Rub warmed sesame/mustard oil all over your entire body, letting the oil soak in for 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Take a hot shower and exfoliate your skin.
  • Eat nourishing meals at regular times. Eat more warm foods like stews, pasta dishes and casseroles and avoid raw foods, salads etc.
  • Avoid cold drafts, wear warm clothes, and don’t forget to wear a hat, scarf and gloves when going out.
  • Ginger is a good remedy for colds. Drink ginger tea.
  • Drink hot water several times a day to remove toxins.
  • Try to avoid dairy products, including yogurt, cheese, milk, and ice cream, if you are congested.
  • A full body oil massage is one of the most pleasant Vata balancing measures.

These are general guidelines and do not apply to people with other disorders, always check with your physician for diet/exercises/lifestyle suitable to your condition.
