What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word meaning the ‘Knowledge of Life’, it is the oldest existing healthcare system in the world dating back as long ago as 5000 BC. Some of the history of Ayurveda found in the Ayurvedic texts written in Sanskrit by great Rishis or Sages form the cornerstone of Ayurvedic medicine.

The trinity of Charaka Samhita, Shushruta Samhita and Ashtanga Hrdyam are the main texts but in fact each family had their traditional texts handed down through the centuries and enscribed on palm leaf.

Ayurveda uses natural ingredients with healing properties such as bark, roots, leaves, spices… The ingredients, therapies, yoga and meditation are all essential elements that combine to redress imbalances of the body, mind, emotions and spirit towards perfect health.

Anyone interested in Ayurvedic healthcare must first seek Consultation with a BAMS (Batchelor of Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery) qualified and experienced Ayurvedic Vaidyar (Doctor).

The consultation is complex and designed to assess an individual’s dominant Dosha which will be one of three forces, Vata, Pitta, or Kapha.

These are ascertained by considering everything from your weight, diet, and bowel movements, skin and hair type etc. to intellect, anger management. This helps to understand food or lifestyle choices thought to aggravate your primary Dosha into imbalance or towards diseases.

The future of Ayurveda in the UK

The first Ayurvedic centre of excellence in the UK has opened in London to undertake evidence-based research into the effects of Ayurveda and Yoga. It is intended that the research programme on education and demonstrations of healthy eating, Ayurvedic diets, massage, reflexology and Indian head massage as well as Yoga are received positively by the English population and can be provided on the NHS.

“We will be providing, on the NHS, patients with yoga, with demonstrations and education on And all this will be subject to a research project led by Westminster University, to find out whether the will take to yoga and these sorts of treatments.
